This is for my friend who's in a dilemma, thought I'd ask on here for her as she has exams.

Basically she's living in a flat om campus with some other girls and applied for it the following year but didn't get into those same flats or something... so... she had to find accommodation elsewhere.

She knows of one girl who's in a house with two other girls. They needed one more girl and had a day left to decide whether to sign up to it under Lancaster University Housing.

Anyway... the girls seemed nice, the house was okay too and she was afraid if she doesn't sign up she'll be left as homeless.

There are 4 bedrooms and two were big, one slightly smaller and one the size of a box. She said well I'll need the bigger room or I won't sign up as right now I have a big one and need it for such and such reasons.

She signed up to the house and got a call today that well, she can't have the biggest room, or the next, or the next... and is left with the box room, can't even fit a desk or cupboard in it.

I live at home so I don't know what she can do. She signed up for a reason (decent sized bedroom which they falsely promised) and they lied to her and gave her something really small. She can find a replacement but it will be difficult to plus at the same time has to look for a house to sign up to which by now are going fast. What can she do?

When did she sign the contract for it? Is there a cooling off period on it? Also When promised the biggest room, was any of this put in writing?

I'm under LUSU housing atm and this kind of thing pisses me off as well tbh.

They charge everyone the same irregardless of room sizes. Although my room is the smallest in the house, my room still have a wardrobe, study desks etc etc so it's not that bad. The biggest bedroom is double the size of mine though.

She signed it about... a week ago? There is no cooling off period, once she's signed to it she can't get out. That's what she's told me anyway. Nothing was put in writing, they just told her she will get what she wants. I guess she is annoyed because of the fact that she can't even sit on the floor in her room. That's how small it is.

Ask her to kick a fuss with LUSU housing.

Be absolutely persistent and say there is no way she can live in that shoebox whilst paying the same amount as everyone else.

I find them... fairly flexible but you must be persistent in 'pushing' them if that's the right term as they are very laid back and any complaints will be forgotten if you don't do any follow up.

I will tell her this right away. I hope she does get what she wants. It's unfortunate to land in such a situation.
