My friend and I are planning on going to Malaysia for 3 weeks, although the destination may change to somewhere else in SE Asia. The thing is, she can only stay for 3 weeks and I'd prefer to make the most of my summer and stay for 4-5 weeks. I was considering going to Thailand, but is it safe for a girl to go on her own?! The reason my friend and I aren't going to Thailand is because we're worried it's a bit too risky for just the two of us, so it's a bit ironic that I'm planning on going on my own. My other options are Vietnam or Indonesia. I'm open to other suggestions! I am quite keen on trying diving, so I was thinking that maybe if I stay in a hotel somewhere like Koh Tao, I could meet people there to hang out with?? Is it easy to meet others on the islands??

I would say out of the three options: Vietnam, Indonesia and Thailand you would experience similar problems/potential problems. I am going to Bangkok with a friend in the next month or so, tag along with us.

On a more serious note, I wouldn't advise it. That said, it really depends on your character and personality and how vulnerable you perceive yourself as being. If you are having doubts, then I'd suggest they are probably grounded and that you (in your mind) would not feel safe being there on your own.

I'm also very interested in rainforest/trekking tours in Indonesia, but I guess I would have to go with a well-known company. Any tips?

My friend did it for two years on and off and he had a great time, but obviously, it's a bit different if you're a guy.

He met people really easily and would hang out with them quite regularly, but he did also get mugged a few times - he's not stupid, just unlucky - so you might want to look out for that. What about going with some kind of organised group?

Check out gapadventures.com. They have loads of different trips in southeast asia that many solo travellers use so that you're with a group of people. They have different styles of tours e.g. ones where you're escorted by a tour guide pretty much the whole time or ones where you're independent but you're transport & hostels are pre-arranged. Their 'YOLO' tours are the latter kind..designed for 18-30somethings who want to do their own thing but have the benefit of being in a group (15 people max) so you get to know people and are safe.

Im going on their 'Indochina Discovery' tour in July. This starts in Bangkok and goes in a big circuit round Laos, Vietnam and Cambodia and back to Bangkok. They're pretty reasonably priced and everythings dirt cheap out there anyway. They have smaller tours that just do thailand or just do vietnam etc.

Are you travelling the whole of Malaysia or like certain areas in the peninsular? It may be worthwhile travelling over to Sarawak/Sabah. I think it's slightly dangerous for a girl to go on her own and you should perhaps make a local friend as you go along because tbh, south east asia isn't a really safe place, especially for a girl alone.

The only really safe place I can think about is Singapore but its more like a city and has loads of shopping. But it is really safe and you can go roaming around at night and no harm will come on you! If I was in Malaysia at the moment, I could take you around but unfortunately, wont be back for some time.

I met lots of girls that were travelling alone in Thailand.

On the jungle trek it's guided so no worries there. Chiang Mai is beautiful and quite easy going.

The islands in the south are very laid back and I would suggest a beach called Thong Nai Pan on the north of Koh Phangan for the diving course. Usually get one to one tuition, the German owner is really nice and it cost me about 70 quid for my PADI open water ticket.

You'll be surprised when you meet fellow lone travellers and that's how some great friendships are created.

    Good Luck, you'll love it!!

Thank you! I'm going to check out YOLO, because it sounds like exactly what I need. I just dont want to go with a company if it's expensive, as SE Asia is supposed to be so cheap, it would be a shame...

    Thanks everyone!

Thailand is actually amazing. It has everything.
I would recommend the south for beaches. City for shopping and old temple and in Bangkok it has an amazingly beautiful temple.
I don't really know about the north though but it seems to be very beautiful...but then again I'm just saying that because I'm biased towards Thailand.

    The food is AMAZING!!!!!

Hmm, the YOLO tours seem a bit expensive. I basically just want to go diving in Thailand or trekking in Borneo for a week or so, and want to be in a group. I cant seem to be able to find any suitable sites. Would it not be safe to fly to Thailand and join a dive school course for a week, like a PADI course that has accommodation on site??

Yeah the adventure companies arent cheap but pretty reasonble I think if you're going for a few months and have no travelling experience - but I see what you mean..too expensive if just going for a week or two.
I think it's your call at the end of the day..from what other people have said it is reasonably safe as long as you're cautious. Joining a dive school with accomodation on site sounds like a good idea because you'll pretty much be in a group anyway so it will be the same kind of thing..and if you want to do any sightseeing you'll probably meet people in the dive school to go with. On a boring note there's injections, anti malarials and travel insurance to sort..don't think you need a visa for that short a time but best to check. Good luck and have fun!

Do ittt, it will be awesome. You will be given a map by a strange man called Daffy and find a private island with a secret community and meet an epic guy called Jed and a huge dope farm, be careful though it could get trippy.

I'm a girl and I went and lived in Thailand for 5 months on my own when I was 19. It was awesome... I love Thailand. I met some very cool people too, some I've stayed friends with even though we're in different parts of the world and it's literally been years...

    Please go scuba diving. =D

Just don't take stoopid risks and trust your gut feeling about things... Like if an offer is there one day, and it's genuine it will still be there at a later date... That was pretty much the best advice I got from the nurse who gave me my vaccinations before going.

'Weird, dangerous and remote'? Thailand and Malaysia are hardly Sierra Leone or Iraq! - People go there for the fantastic ancient & modern cultural attractions, food, scuba diving & snorkelling, rainforest & wildlife, friendliness & hospitality of the people, the sun & amazing beaches - obviously you don't walk around in bikinis or short skirts outside of the beach or touristed areas, but seriously, it's far safer than people realise. It's very easy to make you way around, you meet lots of other travellers, plus in Thailand at least the majority of the population are Buddhist and live to their values, which include calmness & non violence - you're more likely to be attacked in Greece than in Thailand tbh. There's just as much to do in Thailand & Malaysia as there is in Greece, if not more.

Thailand, at least the south, is very touristy. You'd be far from the only alone girl traveller.

    This.

OP, how old are you? well, i think it should be fine for you as longas you are over 18. I am sure that you will be safe in Thailand as long as you go to the safe places. Don't go hang out with strangers that don't seem to be trustworthy. I am sure you will be fine. Have fun.!

PS, Koh Tao is a good idea - the snorkelling was fantastic when I was there, and the scuba diving is amazing too. The island itself has a nice atmosphere, too.

OP It sound like a great idea, as long as you're the kind of person you and others would consider streetwise
My sister went there alone for 6 months and she says you'll be fine in the big cities so long as you're capable.

And honestly there's really not that much difference between safety in Malaysia and Thailand. I wouldn't consider one more dangerous than the other.
Plus, both countries people are really hospitable and kind generally
