A few friends and i have been looking into moving into rented student accommodation next year. However the contract starts in July and we don't get student loan through until September.

Is this common? Is it likely that we'd be able to pay when loans come through or would we have to find the money beforehand?

    Thanks

Yes, lets are usually for 52 week. Although in some places you only pay half rent over the summer, but this practice is slowly dying out. You'll probably have to find the money beforehand which either means budgeting for the rest of this year or using your overdraft.

either eat into your overdraft or get a loan from your parents.

and it depends where on the country you are, in some areas 52 week tenancies are the norm for students, whereas in others they don't make you pay for the summer

Yes, it's normal. If you sign the contract from a given start date, you are liable to pay the rent from that date.

Yeah that's the reason why your student loan for the summer term is probably just a little more than your other 2 previous payments - it seems surprising when summer is generally the shortest term, but it's to help you over the looong break.

Most people work all summer to pay the rent though.
