Modernity = dynamism = thriving economy.

And Presidency isn’t a useless tier of hierarchy in the US. The Royals here effectively count for zilch.

Well I still think it's nice to keep our history.

We've got books for that.

I see your point though. I just think we'd be better off without them.

Yeah, but still, what are we going to put on our banknotes then...

Join the Euro and have some anonymous bridge drawn by some Belgian artist?

Who Here Actually Supports The Royal Family ....

the royal family are a part of british/english history, its not for anyone to decide they should not be supported - they are there: live with it.

hee hee! something like that! I just dont see why we should discuss 'getting rid of' our monarchy - the royal family have been here for hundreds of years, leave them as they are!

damn right...

besides, how can sum of the other ppl on the forum say that u dont like them as people..... u dont even know them personally; ur just basing ur knowledge of them on what the media (or tabloids) tell u.

if any of u have BEEN abroad, u will understand how importantly the rest of the world view the monarchy, and how much they like/respect it. its not just a matter of whether the faces appear on bank notes or not.

and the Queen's 50 years experience as Head of State and Head of the Commonwealth far exceeds that of any prime minister, so im sure her comments are appreciated in the weekly PM/Queen meeting, even if we dont get to hear what is said.
Not particularly.
What's so special about...the Queen? She's only the Queen. Why should she be Queen? Hmph!

Erm, yes it is. The same cuold have been said about quite a lot of things we got rid of- the feudal system, for example.
I dont support them. Why would I have any love for an institution which wouldn't accept me because I was baptised in the wrong kind of church?

Because her father was the former King of the United Kingdom. What about the Queens right to continue in the position her father left her?

The bad thing about the Royal family is their origins....they had to skip over 50 of Queen Anne's relatives so as to ensure the monarch was a Protestant  so, although this may be irrelevant, the wealth and fame (if you like) held by the Royal family was illegitmately granted...still though, you could have said that about the Normans, Saxons and such like and even the tudors with their preferences for Latin and French (Englush was seen as a peasant language)

I think we are in danger of getting rid of things on a whim just because todays society think its right - several hundred years have gone quite well, and we have (arguably) one of the most respected democracies in the world. Why change things now? What if we get rid of the monarchy (and all the other associated things like the Commonwealth) today and then in 50 years time it is decided that we were better off with a monarchy? Also, I am sure many world leaders respect the Queen more than the PM and this is an important part in ensuring we have strong ties with other countries.

What History...do you mean post Queen Anne History...otherwise, the current Royals have nothing to do with pre Queen Anne Britain
