I appreciate this point, but can I just add that just by having an elected leader doesnt make them any more respected - George Bush was elected and he doesnt exactly have the respect of everyone.. and France almost elected a racist leader simply because people took the voting system for granted.. we live in a country where Big Brother and Pop Idol attract more attention than General Elections so its not really a fair indication of who the public want in power.. I think SOME leaders may respect the Queens experience if nothing else, compared to a PM who doesnt even listen to his own cabinet members, or the public when they protest against wars and tuition fees..

Hmm whereas the lovely Prince Phillip has never been known to say anything remotely racist has he? He has apparently said something offensive about approximately two thirds of the world population! Unelected leaders are also frequently without respect- how do you think Chares is going to fare? An elected head of state can at least say that s/he was freely chosen by the electorate.
You were saying before what a respected democracy Britain is- I would have thought that fact that people are less interested in elections than they are in Pop Idol is an indication that things need to change rather than remain the same, wouldn't you?
