So I reinstalled Windows 7 earlier today, and got to installing Thunderbird. Downloaded the 3.01 setup .exe, ran it as usual, Thunderbird started. So far so good.

I then realised that I prefered the previous version (2.00.23), and that importing old profiles into version 3.01 might cause trouble, so immediately closed Thunderbird, uninstalled 3.01 and installed version 2.00.23. It finished the installation but then wouldn't launch- "Thunderbird is already running, but not responding. To open a new window, you must first close the existing Thunderbird process or restart your system"

I checked task manager but couldn't see any Thunderbird type processes to kill, so restarted and got the same error message again when trying to open.
Any ideas- I know there's not much to go on, but maybe someone has had a similar problem?

edit: forgot to say, after restarting and trying a few times I tried uninstalling 2.00.23, then reinstalled 3.01 and got exactly the same problem. Gah.

Thunderbird saves a lock file in your profile that can occasionally lurk after you've closed the program, so TB thinks the profile is still in use when it's not. To fix this, browse to %APPDATA%\Thunderbird\Profiles, click on your profile and delete the file called parent.lock (you may need to enable hidden/system files in order to see it).

If that fails this page has some more helpful advice you can follow. The last alternative would be to delete your profile and start again, so long as you don't mind losing any locally stored information (contacts, emails etc.), but hopefully it won't come to that.

Ah, I wrongly assumed uninstalling would get rid of the appdata! Deleting the profile (which is fine as I hadn't got round to importing my old profile yet) worked, cheers.

Ack, sorry about that- my mouse broke just before I was going to rep you, so I tried doing it with tabbing etc. on the keyboard and it didn't do quite what I wanted! Oops.

(at least I don't have scary amounts of rep power)

Yeah, it didn't make much of a dent. Get a better mouse. :p:
