The libel laws in this country have become a joke. It is 140 times more expensive than the average in Europe to have a libel case in England. Even if you have never been to England and the person accusing you of libel has never been to England, if a single version of your website was clicked on in England, or a single pamphlet ended up there, you can be sued in England, which has given rise to 'libel tourism'.
It's gotten so bad that US states have had to create laws to protect their citizens from being sued in England, to protect them from us!
Simon Singh was recently sued by the British Chiropractic Association for calling their claims 'bogus' (just one for an example, they claim that they can cure asthma from spine manipulation). The judge decided that 'bogus' meant the BCA knowingly deceiving people instead of just their claims being scientifically false. Not only that, but the burden of proof was on Simon to prove that the BCA were knowingly defrauding people even though that wasn't what he meant. He was denied an appeal to change the interpretation of his article, and then was forced to appeal the decision to allow him to appeal.
The libel laws in this country mean that people cannot afford to defend themselves when bullied by large corporations, so they just keep quiet, don't ask the awkward questions or confront the people who sell us remedies that don't work. Scientists and journalists are being forced to self-censored.
We like to think that Britain is a country where you have the right of free speech, but until these laws are changed that just isn't so.
Help change these laws by going to http://libelreform.org/ , signing their petition and reading about all the good work they've been doing.
