Can anyone tell me whether or not your parents went to university makes much of a difference to your selection process? I left mine blank as I wasn't sure whether universities would take the snobbish approach if they hadn't, or if you say yes, universities might feel that it's generally expected that you go to university to please your parents.

I read on times online that Edinburgh gives you a point if you are the only one in your family to go to university, which I find rather discriminating because your application shouldn't be hindered by your parents decisions in the past.

Does anybody have any thoughts on this?

Sorry I should rephrase the title

Does it affect your application if your parents went to uni?

Some universities don't take into account, but others "positively" discriminate in favour of working class students, and looking at whether or not their parents went to uni is one way of doing this.

Birmingham have a scheme whereas that is based as one of the requirements to get a lower offer. I think a lot of Universities do favour those going to University for the first time in their family... I think the ones I applied to did, especially since I mentioned it in my PS

    I doubt it.

Edinburgh award you more application points if you mention it on your PS... but most people don't know this so they don't.
