    Hi,
    I'm struggling through exercise 4A in M1
    anyone know how to do question 9?
    The diagram shows a particle in equilibrium under the action of three or more forces, i can work out parts a) and b) but c) seems to be the problem. :eek:
    Thanks for any help..

    Well on the NW angle it is 45 degrees with Q(N), on the NE it is 30 degrees with P(N)
    The south is 4N and the SW angle is 45 with 8(N)
    .. c find the magnitude of any unknown forces (marked P and Q) and the size of any unknown angles marked θ

    To work out the magnitude of P you can look at it as though Q is going along the horizontal axis and the 8N force is acting south. Then resolve the forces vertically using the angles from your new horizontal and vertical. Once you have the value of P you can revert to the original orientation and resolve vertically to find Q.

    P=(8+4sin45)/sin75

    Q=(4+8cos45-Pcos30)/cos45

    You should get something like that.
