    He is currently prince. He changed his name to a symbol at one point which lead people to refer to him as "the artist formerly known as prince".

    Started as Prince.
    Warned owned the name Prince and so all music released under that title (even thou it is his birth name) they will own.
    Prince changed his name to a symbol because he wanted to own his own music and have full creative freedom.
    When his contract with Warner ran out he began recording under Prince again.
