Stupid NHS

Ok so last week it was finally time for my appointment at the hospital (i had waited 2 months to get an appointment).....So i see the consultant and he has a poke around and decides to admit me into hospital, to perform an emergency laparoscopy the next day. So i go into hospital and wait for him to see me the next day....he doesn't come....I wait till the next day and he says he's not got time to see me and so sends me home and tells me to come and see him next tuesday (today) He asks how i am and i say the pain is actually worse and so he says right let's book you in for a laparoscopy - on the 2nd of September!!!!!!!!!! 6 weeks away! How come last week it was emergency and now when the pain is worse i have to wait 6 weeks? I can't wait 6 weeks, it's agony. I know if i just turned up in A&E with pains they'd blooming well look at me. Grrrrrrrrrrr

:s eep.

No, he's not. I just don't understand his logic.
kick up a fuss, maybe that'll work?

Maybe...i'm going to speak to the GP who referred me tomorrow...failing that i'm looking into blackmarket laparoscopies on the net

hahahahahahaaaa

Ok...unbeknownst to me, my mother (bless her, she only just got out of hospital herself) rang up the consultant's secretary and said that he's going on holiday for four weeks and is coming in "especially on the 2nd of september" my arse.
Anyway......i wangled surgery for the 10th of August with some other dude, qualified surgeon but not a consultant. His secretary said she'd lie on the table for him........not quite sure what she had in mind but i'm thinking it's a good sign

Sue and use the money to go private.

When I get into the RAF I'm going private all the way. NHS doesn't seem like anything you could put your faith into.

Hmmm. 20 year old lady.
laparoscopy
So you have endometriosis or something reproductive organ related?

Its certainly dreadful when they do stuff like that.
Unfortunately we just don't have enough consultants to go around!

Actually it is the summer holidays. You've got to remember alot of these consultants have kids and whatnot.
Its certainly not as bad as Australia/New Zealand (where there is basically no elective surgery for a whole 2 months in summer) but of course everyone wants to take time off during the summer.

As for the cancelled op - it may well be he DIDN'T think you needed emergency entry, but simply was going to try to cram you into his schedule so that he could get you sorted before he left for his hols. I know plenty of consultants who think like that.

But who knows.

Aye, but if you didn't give them perks like that would they want to stick in this country let alone the NHS?

Doubt your case would get very far to be honest.

I agree though, not showing up and then putting it off for 6 weeks is completely unacceptable. I'm glad to hear you've managed to get one done sooner - don't worry that it's not a consultant, they'll still be qualified and perfectly competent in what they have to do  Sucks that you have to settle for this though - although of course like anyone else they are entitled to go on holiday, but should have made better cover arrangements!

You clearly have no knowledge of the law (have you ever read a neewspaper?)

Yeah, cos that will really help the NHS get better. I would personally put my faith in the NHS. I know that it has got worse with the introduction of PFI and foundation hospitals etc but I personally believe that state health care is a right and we must support it so that it remains a right for all.

i wouldn't dismiss suing so flippantly. After all people seem to get comp for all manner of things these days.
Some old lady won thousands because she caught an infection in hospital. Newsflash - hospitals are full of sick people!

My guess - and it would only be a guess - is that on the day the consultant had originally planned to see you, the only way to get you on his list was to book you in as an 'Emergency', dispite the fact it might not have been a *real* emergency. It's one of the easier ways a doc can get round Government guidelines and targets to get a patient into hospital.

As pointed out - I wouldn't be worried about a 'junior doctor' doing the op - he'll be a senior SpR - probably with as much experience as the consultant.

Glad you've got it sorted though  Mums rock!

I stubbed my toe on a nurse once... Kerching?
you won't get anywhere until you use the threat of a complaint. Complaints go on to lists which are then viewed by the government - hospitals like to avoid this if at all possible. A relation of mine did this because he was about to die and they were delaying in giving him the operation he needed. They very promply carried it out once he hit the roof over the matter. (Try not to give yourself a heart attack though over it - or you might end up not needing that operation after all.)

I don't begrudge the bloke a holiday..of course not..
but he did think it was an emergency because well....3 people had a feel up my bits (that sounds so vulgar i am so sorry) and it was so painful that he phoned up the ward immediately and said they were booking me in, the pain was the worst he'd seen :-s
which begs my next question....it's now worse...and you're putting me off...warum?!
