    Does anyone know what the average waist and chest size is for the average young British man?

    I'm inbetween 32' and 34' at the waist (which means I have to buy 34') and 38' on the chest. Apparently that's an odd combination, according to the shop assistant at the store I bought my suit from. :confused:

    No, I'm probably on the skinny side, if anything. Is a 38' chest larger than average?

    I wouldn't say so.

    No, 38" is a medium as far as Im aware. My boyfriend takes a 40" top for his shoulders, but he's the same waist size as you.

    You probably just have broad shoulders, dont worry, its very attractive as far as Im concerned!

    I think the person was probably talking about the ratio of your waist to your chest.

    It's nothing to worry about

    I'm not sure, haven't really had to measure in a while. It's just when I saw 38' I automatically thought of waist size, but attributed it to the chest for some reason. It's probably perfectly normal.

    As long as you look balanced when you look in the mirror.

    I've always found suit sizes a bit odd tbh. I'm a 32" waist, but with suits I need a 34" (sometimes even a 36") waist.
    Depending on the cut, I'm 38" or 40" on the chest.

    According to Asos:
    38" = small
    40" = medium

    In fairness, with suits you are ALWAYS supposed to get them tailored after buying them.

    36' chest

    30-32' waist (amusingly apparently 30' isnt universal in shops or same trouser type)

    Interesting question. There is of course no average, but traditionally 'British suits' have been a large classic cut (ie. wide shoulders, not tapered, straight and wide on the waist and leg) mainly because that is the traditional shape of the British men. Contrasted with slimmer, narrower and somewhat shorter Italian men in particular and Europeans. Of course in the modern world, this has all changed and there is no standard British size just like there is no standard British 'look'.

    Your size is not necessarily odd but manufactured suits are made to certain proportions. For instance the most common being that the jacket (chest size) is nearly always 6 inches larger than the waist. So if you were to buy a 32 waist you will get (as standard) a 38 inch chest Jacket, or a 34 inch waist with a 40 inch. However, your problem is very common because there are more people who don't fit into these proportions than do.

    In my opinion (I worked with suits in retail) I would go for a slim fit suit which will fit your shoulders well and will will also give you a tapered look. I would recommend also trying to let the waist out on the trousers a little (usually the maximum is about 1 and 1/2 inches). Or of course, in an ideal world, have a suit made bespoke, but that will cost you anywhere from £800+. Go for Italian or European slim fit suits as these will fit you best. Avoid British and American style suits as these are cut much larger on the shoulders and will hang on you.

    Just realised how old this thread is but hope it helps anyway.

    So you have an average waist size, and are a size medium in tops, which is average. How strange, lol. :eek3:
