Staying fit...

Ok, I just recently started exercising and dieting about 5 days ago and I'm doing pretty good so far. I'm origonally 5'2" and 111 lbs. I'm pretty much keeping the same diet I've always had, but dropping all sweets and paying closer attention to how often and how much I eat. I have also been jogging everyday for 40 minutes and in addition been doing stomach crunches, pushups and leg lifts...Someone told me that it was not healthy to do this everyday like I've been doing and that I should switch to every other day instead, but I was skeptical...Does anyone have any advice on this?

If by exercising your main aim is to loose weight , than i suggest interval training instead of jogging.

I'm no fitness guru but interval training helps increase metabolisim rate.

Hmm... I think that (if you are already relatively fit) it would be ok to do 40 minutes jogging everday, so long as you listen to what your body is telling you and don't do too much, too fast.

Any exercise on top of that, I would do every other day, to give your body a chance to recover.

Well, I already somewhat do interval training...I really didn't know what it was until I just now looked it up and realised that I already do it. Alot of my workout is on a treadmill, so I start jogging, walk when I get tired, jog some more, and so on...I always vary the intensity and each day, my exercise pattern is slightly different...

Yes but if in Interval training your heart works at a greater rate .

Buy a step-counter (counts your steps per day) and make sure you're doing at least 10,000 per day. When I bought one I found that I was only doing about 7,000, so you could probably get some more walking in there.

Jogging is also good but if like me you find it mind-numbingly boring, buy a good fitness video. Hip-hop workout it good but only if you have rhythm and don't mind his very nasal American accent.

Cool thanks. Nasal American accents are more likely to amuse me than annoy me, so its all good...

If what you're doing is working don't stop, you're probably not working your muscles to exhaustion with your crunches and stuff so you can do them everyday if you want.

40 minutes jogging is a good amount of cardio to be doing a day, and watching what you eat is also a sensible option. Basically, your plan will work, it could be better, but theres no point radically changing everything just for the sake of being that little bit more efficient at fat burning(at least in your case).

So good luck, and keep at it, the hardest part is doing what you're doing week in, week out, for however long you need to do it.

usually personalised fitness programmes stick to 5-6 times a week, with 1-2days off in a row. Its true that too much excercise (this is for blokes) is bad for u as it eats up testosterone - but thats only in the extreme cases of cycling say 100miles a day 7days a week - which some athletes do!! as long as you drink plenty before, during and after ull be fine. Have a glass of strong orange squash (NOT sugar free) soon after excersise as this will help replace lost sugars/salts most efficiently. The BBC Sports academy website is excellent for this kinda thing http://news.bbc.co.uk/sportacademy/default.stm

Thanks for the advice guys  I've been reading alot of different things though on the net so I'm still not too shure. I guess I'm not totally pushing myself to the limit, so I should be ok doing it everyday...And if I don't have time on certain days, then I know I'll still be fine

If you're a noob to the keeping fit malarky then a 3 day split should be sufficient, which includes cardio and muscle

40 mins a day cardio is good, but remember not to over do it and get yourself an injury, gradually build up your program etc

In addition, it often helps to put your program of workout and diet into writing, do it on the pc, because as a result of this, you're 70% more likely to stick to your regime than if you were relying on memory to complete your progrram.
