Why is Johnny Depp considered so attractive?

I don't get it, he's not an ugly guy, but he's far from what I'd call classically attractive/handsome either. He's rather scrawny, and his face is alright looking, but not a work of art either, quite a decent tan I suppose.

However, is his level of attractiveness based on his looks primarily, or is it more based on his powerful presence, and slightly "bad boy" image he puts across in his acting?

Maybe I'm blind or totally missing something, but from a physical point of view he's far from what I'd call sexiest man alive, etc.

edit: edward cullen. I don't know. Why do people find him attractive? I personally think he looks a bit gross. And I swear he has only one facial expression throughout whole of twilight. Talking about twilight, how did bella get pregnant, surely she should have died cuz all vampire liquid is venom?

Retrospect

I actually didn't like him much in Pirates of the Caribbean, but think he's gorgeous otherwise. I can't really pinpoint something specific, but some men just have a kind of general... aura.
