They should still see you at teh doctors at home, theres a form you can fill out and then they see you.
I always get seen at home if I'm ill at home. Try ringing up another doc in your area other than your usual one if they won't see you.

You will have to register as a "temporary resident" but they still have to see you if you need to be seen. I don't know if FPCs will do blood tests for stuff that isn't sexual health-related.

I think most STI tests don't involve taking a blood sample anyway - I was only offered a blood test for HIV.

I'm surprised the receptionist didn't tell you you could register as a temp patient at a different surgery.

Receptionists at doctor's are old and bitter. And don't care if you die at home lying in a pool of your own vomit.

Receptionists need to strike a balance between being evil (gets rid of malingerers and people being a pain in the arse) and being highly empathic and efficient if something is genuine. Unfortunately some land more on the evil side.

Blissy - I guess you're right on that one, so they wouldn't do it ordinarily then at all, would they?

It wasn't at all part of the standard testing for me. I got a separate sheet telling me all about it and asking whether I wanted to have it done on top of the standard STI tests (which didn't involve any blood samples).

Exactly!
Lauren just go back to the docs, tell the receptionsit you were on their books before you went to uni, and that you want to register as a temporary resident.
then there is one flimsy A5 piece of paper (if you take your NHS certificate - that will have your uni docs name, address, and your nhs number etc) to fill in and you should be able to see the doc.
I men an anaemia test is soooo simple anyway, its just a blood count.

This doctors surgery is full of old dragons. They said the docs in Cam had my records and they would have to apply for them. I can go to the FPC tonight, so I might as well go get a full health test done, I'm sure they can tell me if my blood count is ridiculously low? Can I just walk in and ask for a test (ie blood test) or do I need to phone up?

I told them that and they wouldn't take me :frown: all I wanted was a prescription. Are they just being mean?

thats rubbish they don't need to apply for your medical records at all. Or at least they didn't at mine you aren't changing doctors you are just seeing them as a temp patient.

they're all hopeless. i just phoned the doc. they won't see me and they say i have to have a referral for a blood test anyway. then i phoned the number they gave me for a sti place and they won't do it without a referral. then they said i could go to the hospital but i'd need a referral, altho this woman was nice so she said go to the FPC and they can refer me.

You don't need a referral for a blood test to see if you're aneamic! I sure as hell didn't, there again my doctor would actually see me. Don't tell the docs why you want an appointment, you shouldn't have to anyway, just try to make one. I've been aneamic 3 times and each time i went to the doc and had a blood test before being put on iroon tablets.

they really are talking ****. See i'll warrant it isn't even the doctor but the damned receptionists.
Now i checked up, and the system is damned stupid Practices don't have to accept anyone they don't want to
but i also founbd this
"(ii) a temporary resident - resident in the area for more than 24 hours but not more than 3 months - in which case the patient will again get free primary medical treatment."

try calling nhs direct helpline - maybe they will know the correct protocol.
And no they dont have to access your old records - as temp place all they need do is send anything they do to your new docs.

Whereabouts in Liverpool are you Lauren> Marybone health centre and the drop in centre near pizza hut in town will see you plus the out of hours docs at arrowe park are really good so they'll prob see you too.

Urgh - getting seen by your GP is often really hard. I went in [lets see...] last monday on my way home from work to book an appointment. My appointment is a week on monday, so 3 weeks later!
Reply 17
That's really harsh that they won't give you a blood test...I went in one day and didn't feel too well and my GP said they could run a blood test. I went to the receptionist and she said just pop upstairs. It takes two minutes! Results took about a week to come back.
