Nothing basically apart from swimming....any other cardio involves pressure on your back.....

agree with Fleece... Cardio is going to make the back pain worse...

If you can get comfy and sit still, you can use the gym cycles without hurting your back too much. It'll depend on where abouts your back is injured though.

The only other thing I can think of is lying on your back, lifting your legs (straight) as high as you can and hold them there until it burns. I forget what it's called, but it was part of American football training for tummy toning and it makes your stomach ache for hours!

Leg raises? (lying)

Thanks for the advice
I've found aerobics isn't hurting it too much, so I've been doing a bit of that too.

I assumed they'd have a more technical name than that

How have you found swimming with a bad back? When I hurt mine I found I couldn't manage any strokes where arms circled past head without pain! The only thing I could have done was that 'old woman keeping hair dry breaststroke' so i had to stay out of the pool for a week or two!

You're not swimming like that, are you? :p:

I normally butterfly, but that's kinda out of the window. Back, breast and front crawl all seem to be ok though.

ooh! I found out I can do fly the other week. I hadn't tried it since I was about 12 because my only memory of it was being shouted at for not being able to finish two lengths of it  :frown:

I still wouldn't like to do more than two lengths of it though... freestyle is much more soothing!

Hehe. I'm a total butterflier  I can do about 10 lengths of it  (Then I die and my arms fall off)

Pillates, yoga. -You'd prbably need to go to a club to do these but pillates especially is designed to be low impact on your back.

 Must be an interesting sight for the rest of the pool!

Do you know of any pools 50m (or even 30) around here that the public can use? I'm a wee bit out of west London and the only pool here is 20m and full of slow people. I would travel for a proper pool!

I heard rumours that there was a 50m just in town somewhere, but I don't know if it's public and I haven't lived here long enough to be able to find anything yet
