I have to say that I hate the television with a passion. It dominates the family life in my house, and I can't stand it. My Mum (fair enough, she's disabled) sits and watches TV all day, but the problem is that all of the chairs in the room are directed towards the television, and my parents do everything infront of the TV. The only time we don't sit infront of the TV eating our meals is at Christmas, and that's because we have to 'make an effort'. I would love to sit in my living room and read a book, but it's so hard when the TV is blaring out all day.

Sorry, this has turned into a rant about how I hate the telly in my house.

I'm going to university next year, and I am not planning on investing in a television, nor will I have one in my house when I'm older (unless I move in with someone and they want one).

No not at all. Children's tv just gets better and better, and there are plenty of educational, cultural, and interesting programmes. The 'idiot box' I would suggest reflects culture as much as it creates it.

And anyway this isn't Educating Rita, you know. We can sing in the pubs and find food for thought everywhere, not everything just comes down to 'buy another dress' anymore.

I have rarely enjoyed myself watching anything, porn and football aside, as I did watching Life. I didn't feel like an idiot watching it.
As long as everything on TV isn't for idiots, then I don't think it can be referred to as The Idiot Box, as that insults the people NOT watching idiotic programming.

Well most programmes are made for the average, which by definition is the largest group of the population. Then you have the highbrow stuff like BBC Four and documentaries, and then things like "Katie Price and Why I Love Her" on Channel 5 or something. You can find good stuff if you look for it. Although I agree, ITV has lots of rubbish.

For the content one would have to expect it's watched by a majority of idiots, as the majority of shows are "£%^, ITV is #1 idiot channel. Still we all have our idiot moments.
For psychological affect it perhaps justifies its title too, the more tv you watch the more passive, unstimulated you're liable to get. At least thats my experience, I do go through my tv addict stages and probably watch too much of it.
