Terrified!!! [Booster Jabs]

right ok, next year in school we have to get our booster jabs, and i am ******** it big time!!!! there is nothing worse, to me, than getting a needle, i would do a bungee jump quicker! I havent got a needle since i was like 5 or 6, that means i have missed my BCG, Meningitis, and polio. im realy scared stiff of needles, i even had to get sleeping gas instead of a needle to get 2 teeth out!!! i swear, if there was any other way then i'd do it, just not a needle, there is no way on earth i am getting a needle!!

There's no point in worrying about it. Although if your parents don't agree they can't give you it. You could try your doctors and get it done there instead.

i just look away and shut my eyes, i had something done to my shoulder last year. I didnt like jabs but now i dont mind them. Having a local put into your shoulder and a scarple poking around is much worse. Just go for the jabs and afterwards treat yourself to something youve been wanting for ages, you'll soon forget about them and least you'll be protected.

none at all... im not even scared of the dentist, although hes knows never to use a needle on me

do you actually have a panic attack, or just begin to panic?

This is a problem you really need to try and overcome. Is it due to a bad experience, or is it just an instinctive fear??
I'm afraid i'm not the best person to advise you on how, because I find it hard to comprehend why people have such an irrational fear of something like this, especially when you consider the possible alternative..
Meningitis.
That scares me.

What if you could go in to the room, listening to your personal stereo?? Do you think that would help? If you can just close your eyes and zone out with the music, you probably wont even realise when the jab has been done.

You need to get over this fear, I know it's difficult but a small scratch compared to a full on disease has to be better.

What about trying a hypnotist? The can maybe relax you so that you aren't as afraid of needles. I know how you feel about panic attacks, I've suffered from them and they're horrible, but once again a hypnotist could help.

I hope you can overcome this fear soon hunny, :hugs: Getting injections are important. If you go to your own doctor, you can explain how scared you are and they might be able to reassure you. I'm not sure if they can but, isn't there a gel that can numb the area while the injection goes in or is this just for taking blood? Anyone?

You seem to have worked this fear up in your mind. Ask yourself, what is so scary about needles?
Would you go and get a jab if you didnt even have to see a needle?
Don't panic. Honestly, its perfectly fine. Doesn't hurt one little bit! Just remember that before you get it and look away from your arm and the nurse when you're getting it done and think of something else.

actually i think the stuff used by most places does have some lidocaine in (local anaesthetic). The trick is to really rub it in to get a decent effect (or so one lovely nurse taught me )

And gemchicken think of it like this
you don't know what its like to have polio, or TB etc but they are hideous. You DO know what its like to have cold.
Now there isn't an injection to stop the common cold. But if there was an injection - all of 10 seconds pain maximum which meant you wouldn't have to endure 2 weeeks of sniffling, headaches, coughing....
wouldnt you take it..?
I'm of the age to remember a class mate from Junior School who'd had polio. Remember the way he tried to play football with a caliper on his leg. Probably why I made sure all my kids were vaccinated against everything. My mate at Uni this year didn't have his mumps injection before he started-he then got mumps and really wshes he'd had the innoculation. I know it's awful - I hate injections as well. Relax your arm and look away - should help. But have the injections - the altetrnative is just not worth contemplating.

I too am terrified of needles. But do not worry. I had to have a blood test done on Monday and it never hurt that bad. Just like when you get a scratch.
