I don't do Physics and hence may not have any knowledge on the strenght of the radiation, but I didn't claim they are definitely dangerous, but may be found to be so in the future.
If you think they're dangerous, don't use a mobile phone. Or WiFi internet. Infact, you're possibly better off sitting at home.

I think it's a very good idea. The people looking at the scanner images will hardly be thinking about what your body looks like - they'll have seen so many go through.
People shouldn't complain about it unless they have something to hide.

Of course I wouldn't want to be blown up; but the thing is that even with advanced technology and security measures, we can see that attacks still happen. Extremely strict measures have been imposed and still we've seen an attempt recently, which means that the probability that such scanners will decrease the chance of a plane being blown up is very small, especially as mentioned before, these scanners do not show what is inside the body.

Any decrease in the chance of a plane being blown up is worth it imo.

The attacks will always happen, murders have been happening for centuries and we still haven't found a way to 100% stop them but theres been a decrease, when technology progresses we will get a slow decrease in successful attacks eventually it will be minimal but someone somewhere will always find a way to do it.

    WTF?!
Thanks God, I'm not the only person arguing that these scanners are exposing one's privacy !
If you don't mind having your body pictured, I do!
Ok let's ditch the potential rescue of an airliner because you won't be x-rayed. Let the dead babies rest on your shoulders.

If it has the potential to save any lives at all, I am 100% for it.

Christ. Some of you bring the word 'prude' to a whole new level. 'Oh noooo somebody who doesn't know me, in a room where they can't see my face or know my name, will know that I possess a penis/vagina/breasts'. I could figure out that you have a penis/vagina/breasts just by looking at your face, morons.

    SOURCE PLEASE.

What you gave is completely unrelated to what you said.

"Results of the Louisiana Obese Subjects Study"

    Yeah... CT scan related alright.

WHAT I GAVE was the home page of a medical journal in which the research was published.

Well If they are dangerous at all then the crews will evidently be the first to show symptoms, being that they travel somewhat more often than passengers...?

I also remember some airport official saying that the scanners weren't going to catch anyone, they were just there to make people feel safer and stop them abandoning air travel.

You obviously have enough time on your hands to post 1600+ posts in 3 months, so I'm sure you have enough time to type CT scans in the search engine.

the body scanners is the terrorists winning, they say that they aren't going to keep the photos however they say that but they will keep them, you can see private parts of the people, technically it could be considered child porn when they get scanned. i don't see why i should be forced to get a body scan just to go abroad when i know i'm not a terrorist

Imagine how you would feel though if you were opposed to these scans, they didn't exist and a terrorist blew up a plane and killed someone you love because they had snuck explosives onto the plane. Then hearing 'If full body scanners had scanned the terrorist, this atrocity would have been prevented'.

Imagine how you would feel though if you were opposed to being segregated into your house, you have freedom of going out and a lightning killed someone you love. Then hearing 'If we were all being segregated, this atrocity would have been prevented'.

Idiot. If you actually look at how they work you will see there's no danger.
    There are 2 types
The first type (millimeter wave): The rays only penetrate clothes not skin
Second (backscatter): X-rays but no more than you are exposed to by flying at altitude for 2 minutes. And given you are about to board a flight that's no big deal.

    http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn...010302330.html

Whether they work in finding explosives is another matter
Before insulting people, you could even turn on your brain, you know?

Perhaps then you'd realize that all of the info we know about the scanners are provided by the companies that produces them. They have not been analysed by an independent organisation.
And even if they sent over a machine to be analysed, who guarantees you that what they are going to install it's really what they claim it to be?

Some passengers at Heathrow and Manchester airports will have to go through full body scanners before boarding their flights under new rules.

    http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk/8490860.stm

So does that mean only selected people will be scanned ?!

I would definitely not want to have my whole body image being generated, and I have a feeling that in few years time, they will raise concerns to the public about the danger of the scan because I'm sure having your whole body penetrated through with such strong rays can extremely damage the body cells!

    I think this is rediculous!
Seeing as noones mentioned this yet, just though I'd ask why you have such a problem with this (someone seeing you "naked", used in a vague sense cos they don't actually see YOU or actually see you properly naked, as a means to an end, i.e. to catch a flight) but you wouldn't have a problem with going to a doctor (who would actually see YOU in person, in front of you and would see you naked in person if needs must, as a means to an end also, i.e. getting you better if you have a problem).

As far as I can tell these are both situations where someone needs to see you at varying degrees of nakedness in different situations, but both still due to something you want to do (get a flight and get your ailment treated).

Personally I'd have much less problem with letting some person in a far away room see an image of me that is hardly even revealing and is not related to me in person and is seen for like 10 seconds, than being in person naked with a doctor!

I know they are different situations, however if you want to fly, you get scanned, if you want to get better, a doctor sometimes needs to see you naked.

I would imagine it would be medical physicists, just like they would in a hospital. It would not be difficult to measure the radiation output of the machine.
