I am 19 and on a gap year. The only work experience I had was during the one week placement during school.

I have applied to plenty of retail places.

My local Tesco and Asda doesn't have any vacancies.

I heard the shoe shop Clarks takes on people with no experience, but they told me to come back in March :sigh:.

I should think most bottom of the ladder jobs will consider you, even with no experience. Look for transferable skills you have that may help you get your foot in the door with certain jobs. Are you great with computers, so able to pick up new software/ tills etc quickly? Have you got good interpersonal skills or a hobby or interest relating to the job in question? Things like this can help tremendously.

Lots of jobs don't require any experience, but the problem is that at the moment as unemployment is so high, you will be competing against lots of people who do have experience. You just have to keep trying. Lots of retailers and basic admin jobs will accept speculative applications even if they aren't advertising. Check the websites of national retailers who have bases near you (lots of high street shops have online application forms), and go into town and hand out CVs! Check the job centre website and local newspaper (or their website) for job adverts, which will usually specify what skills/experience they require (you may have the necessary skills even if you don't have work experience, eg IT skills). Good luck!

Also, you could take on some voluntary work while you are looking for paid work, as this will provide you with the experience you are lacking and make it easier for you to gain paid work. A lot of charities are always looking for people to volunteer in their shops, or doing admin for them. Check their websites/go in and ask. You could also check out the national volunteering database (google 'do it').

Just hand in some CV's and see what unfolds.

It depends really, Apple said they wanted people with previous experience, I went in with no experience yet still got the job.
