i need a topic for my as level biology coursework. something different but not too inpractical to write an essay about.

Prion Diseases: CJD

Check this out:
- contageous disease caused by proteins which misfold and cause a chain-reaction of misfolding (you can talk about protein structure etc.)
- symptoms are pretty gruesome: Rapidly progressing dementia
- 100% mortality
- prions are difficult as **** to get rid off. They can remain intact at high temperatures + extreme pH's, making transmission via surgical instruments + meat (aka BSE) a possibility.
- similar prion diseases include FFI, a disease that is similar to CJD in terms of mortality and mechanism, but targets parts of the brain that are involved in sleep. You get increasing insomnia, hallucinations and you eventually go mute then die.

Very scary ****. Don't read about it if you are a beef-eating hypochondriac.
