Blood in the stool is not always cause for concern - if it's bright red, it's likely caused by a haemorrhoid or a small tear in the skin around the anus, sometimes referred to as a fissure. Blood vessels inside the distal colon can also break and cause some bleeding with the stool.

If the blood is dark it's likely coming from a higher up source, in large volumes it may also turn the stool black and maybe change its consistency. This is more of a worry as it could indicate gastric ulcers or possibly some sort of inflammatory bowel disease among other things. Obviously depends on other symptoms too sometimes.

I've dealt with the latter as I have Crohn's, I've learnt now the difference between what kind of bleeding for me is alarming and what is really nothing to worry about. Regardless though you should go and see your GP, they will be able to confirm where the bleeding in coming from, maybe prescribe you something if it's say haemorrhoids or refer you on to a specialist. I wouldn't be embarrassed they have heard/seen it all before.

Might be piles. Mind you, I thought I had piles and it turned out to be a polyp which is going to have to be removed. Not to scare you or anything! Polyps are nothing to worry about anyway (I hope!) but go to the doctors to find out what it is.

Well I noticed it more when I was wiping. It wasn't just bits of blood you get from the odd small burst vessel.

Should I wait to see if it happens again next time before going to the doc?

Don't worry if it only happens once. Do worry if it won't stop.

Hmm lets see..... upper GI bleed will give you dark blood, lower GI bleed will give you redder blood. BOTH parts can be invaded with cancer. Any blood coming out your behind is worth looking into - especially if you cant think of a good reason why it is!

Depends I suppose...How much blood are we talking about here?
If it's a tiny bit then I doubt you should worry- probably just a tear in the skin.

I have the same problem. First time it happened was almost a year ago and become more frequent since, like 2-4 times a week. Generally just small amounts and usually mucus aswell or just mucus which itself is a weird colour itself most times.

Twice or three times I literally just passed about a cupful of blood which is when I actually freaked out but this was over 3 months ago and didn't get round to the appointment with the doc to be poked about, just don't sit comfortable with me unless it was urgent. I was taking a risk but I'm still standing. Still get blood now though but nothing like that time and apart from random sensitivity attacks on the stomach area where it can't be touched, weird bowel movements where I get diarrhea, constipated and everything in between I'm quite healthy I'd say.

For peace of mind get it checked out, I wouldn't recommend my way of doing things. Good luck

Why are so many people on here so intent on scaring him? Invaded by cancer my arse!

Go to the docs and they'll be able to tell you more, if its more redder blood sounds like piles to me. Either way, if you get it sorted quick you can get it treated quick which means no more worry

But please, dont listen to these fearmongering people! It will only make you more stressed which will affect your body!

"Invaded by cancer my arse" - I didnt even recognise the pun then! :p:

I disturb myself knowing about these things! However like I said I have Crohn's so I've literally discussed all of these matters until I'm blue in the face.

You should really go to a doctor! Especially given you say you have a sensitive stomach and weird bowel movements. Not to scare you but all of that together sounds like you possibly have a more sinister condition than 'just a little bleeding'. I understand no one likes to be poked about however investigation into bowel disease begin with a harmless blood test. Your GP is not going to start shoving things up you don't worry!

There are these amazing people called doctors who, if you see, will probably be able to do a damn ste better job of what it is and how serious it is than people attempting to diagnose over the interent.

Blood in stool if a good reason to visit a doctor. It could be all kinds of things
