Well having inspected your body, I would say get medium, just cos large would be for ppl like evil_genius and small like K*.
So get medium, cos they are quite roomy anway.

posh_git - yes everyone gets to wear gowns at your final graduation, fancy ones with furr on them and colours to show what subject you've done, or something like that!

gowns - also at Trevs you get to try them on before you buy them, so Trevelyanites to be don't worry about what size you need to get! ....actually saying that I've just checked mine out and I'm sure they don't come in different sizes (at Trevs at least!)....kinda like a "one size fits all" I guess

so how was dobbos run, anybody kno?

Gowns are sized somehow or another. Mine says 48", and fits perfectly, despite the fact that my suit size is 42"L. When we got there, the freshers reps just kinda looked at us, then measured it across our shoulders. Gowns are very loose anyway, and a size or 3 up or down would probably make no difference.
If you're really interested you could read all about the academic dress of the University of Durham in wikipedia.
Another interesting point is:
"The Durham Scholars' gown (rarely seen) has the forearm seam sown up, i.e. identical to the Oxford Scholars'. St Chad's college gown (also rarely seen) adds a two black buttons at the lower end of the forearm, joined across the (open) seam by 5 inches of twisted green cord."
apparently there are a couple of odd gowns, but I'd assume that if you're at Chad's or a scholar, then they'd sell you the right gown.
And Dobbs, the funny coloured gowns are the hoods you wear with your UG gown when you graduate. You are allowed to wear a plain black "literate's hood" before graduation, but I've never, ever seen anyone wearing one, and I doubt whether they're still in production. You don't wear hoods to formal anyway, even if you are a graduate.

It was good  Did 6.5miles (just over 10km) which is exactly half of the Great North Run (13 miles if you can't work it out :p: ) though I jogged quite slowly and got slowed down by traffic, and a big steep hill which I hadn't quite prepared for lol...but did it in a nice relaxed 55mins

Which means hopefully my proper 13 mile run will be done in under 2hrs. Though I got my race number today, and somehow they have predicted that I will finish in under 1hr35mins!! So I'm an "Orange Runner" lol....and so I get to start infront of all the normal "White Runners". Though behind all the elites and people who've done 10 or more Great North Runs. Damn them

Hehehe....and I wasn't even very tired when I finished, which is a good sign!

I would think about it but don't you have to be a member of a proper running club to do it? Though I'm considering joining Duham University Athletics this year, and if they can get me into doing it, I will

Have regretted getting out of running, used to be good at High School but then stopped, trying hard to get back into it! Love the long distance stuff

And Fili - you're thinking about rowing at Durham?:biggrin::biggrin::biggrin: hehe

You can run through a charity. That's what I'm doing.

Ah but then don't you have to raise some stupid amount of money? It's hard to do that when you're a student as everyone's really cheap lol

Though guess if it was a London marathon deal I could get quite a lot of sponsors  I'll look into it sometime

Fili - wow, didn't know you were a rower! I row at Trevs, lots of fun! Though we're not a very good team (due to variety of reasons, one being one of our crewmembers has a slow response time and so is slightly out of time  and that we got assigned a coach who is officially one of the most hated people in Trevs...well, he's left now....but he was a right **** and was a crap coach!)......but we row more for a laugh than to actually win stuff! ...plus it's damn good exercise....I think I'm gona be a cox this year too if they need people to be

I think one needs to raise 3000GBP, which isn't very hard to do in London. I already have a total of about 2000 squid promised from a few friends.

Yes I am. Well was when I was at school. Was good fun and our coach was very good, tho got mardy from time to time. I would sit bow if we were in 4, but somewhere in middle when I was in 8.I preferred bow but he would put the only guy in it. Also he realised that being in the bow was prob the safest as I had a phobia of water and would therefore force me to sit in the rockiest of places, even tho I was an excellent bow woman.

Ah you are so bitter about your crap coach!

:mad::mad::mad::mad: This is him.....(on our lovely Trevelyan College Boat Club 24-hr Rowathon....I did 2 stints - 6.30pm-6.45pm then 4am-4.30am....then went rowing at 7am, oh, I felt ill! :frown:)

Fili - yay! A fellow bowperson! I row bow, it's blatantly the best place, since no-one can really see you and if you want to slow down you can hehe...also you can criticise everyone else since only you (and the cox) can see everyone. Lots of fun....also I've only rowed in an 8 once but I was also bow there. Love the position. Rowed stroke side a couple of times, but I hate it lol

I tried stroke, but its tough. The cox really gets on my nerves and shouts all the time and wen she's pulling her little thing I feel it the most and puts me off my stroke.I love sculling(two oars), feel more in control so wont be falling into the Hades that is below, yuk.
Im still thinking about whether to continue rowing at durham tho. I might take up summat else, maybe lacrosse. Although my rents want me to do tennis, but keep trying to explain to them that I am rubbish and there is no use playing tennis unless your good.
