I have an exam tomorrow and I have to write a short story. I have it planned out but for the first paragraph i want it to be in italics.

Obviously the story has to be handwritten. Is there a procedure for indicating the italics, such as underlining it? I dont take English at a-level so i am a bit unsure

Unless you can vary your handwriting and give it an actual italic slant, underlining is pretty much your only option. It will look a bit weird if it's a whole paragraph, though.

You could just write [i] at the beginning and its partner at the end.
