i applied to york university to do psychology but when i checked ucas it said:

Congratulations; The University of York has asked us to tell you that it is offering you a place for Sociology with Social Psychology, L392; starting in October 2010 at point of entry 1.
The conditions of the offer are:

This offer is subject to you obtaining:

Obtain grades BBB at Advanced Level in 3 subjects.
This offer is for a different course.

why would they put me in for a different course when i am predicted A*AA in my a-levels and for psychology they only wanted AAB???

I dunno, but if you applied for Psychology, unless you really want to go to York, I'd tell them where to put it :lolwut:

Occasionally unis will give offers for different courses, there are a number of reasons for doing this, so best thing to do is to contact them and find out

Maybe because Psychology is way oversubscribed, they wanted to have you at their university and felt that you'd be more suited to that new course based on your interests, or the rest of your application wasn't as strong.

It would be worth giving them a call but that course still sounds alright, IMO.

A similar thing happened to a friend. It wasn't a university he set his heart on, so he ignored it. Phone them up, maybe they thought you might be more suited for it from reading your personal statement.

just becasue you got A*AA at alevel it does not mean you are good enough. there is more to psychology than A grades.

call the uni though and discuss it with them.

In all fairness, given what the requirment is and what his grades are, he would need to make a really really really bad impression on them to get rejected.

Sometimes, universities offer you a place on a similar course that may interest you if their other is over-subscribed.

Or maybe it is a mistake on their part. Call them up to enquire about it.

I know Leeds do this for my course - they sometimes give people an offer for the course without a work placement because the one with a work placement is so ridiculously oversubscribed.

not always. for alot of courses at alot of unis, anyone who meets the minimum requierments are treat equally to those who are way above.
for some courses it is not always about getting 10A*s coz that only shows you are good at remembering stuff it does not show you have the qualities for the course.

durham judge you on interview and personal statement as long as you meet minimum requierments. i dont know how york do it.
