First, you're English not American presumably, so it's Maths.

Pedantry aside, only at the very top unis. Even then, if you're good, they'll probably just shrug it off. So don't worry about it too much.

Though it will affect what courses you're allowed to do at A level very strongly, so don't just hope for the best and not bother either.

In the UK, it is called Mathematics GCSE. Universities and Colleges normally require at least a grade C to progress to Further or Higher Education, but there are opportunities for re-takes, if these are needed. A grade C can now be achieved on both the foundation and higher tier examinations.
