    Hi,

Ive applied to Lincon starting in Sept. I was just wondering if the Courts accomodation is wifi or wired internet? Also, any restrictions on it?

    Thanks

Courts has wired internet. It's pretty good speed but I'm not sure if there are any restrictions, although there are certain sites that are blocked, like pirate bay. As far as I know none of the other main student accommodations (pavillions, junxions, brayford quay, hayes wharf) have wireless either.

    Hope that helped.

Nah I've only come across that one myself. Don't think there is much blocked.
And as for the wireless router I'm not sure but I can't imagine you'd get into bother for it... don't know anyone who has done it though.

I know at pavs/junxion they have no issues with wireless routers but offer no support for them, I can't really see it being an issue either in courts and to be honest if using a cable router with the WAN port they wouldn't really know there's multiple devices as long as you keep it secure.

my boyfriend tried to use xbox live while living in courts but couldn't because he needed to enter a password to access the internet...I think this is why anyway

The internet at Courts is amazing. Torrents don't work, but if you are a downloader, get a rapidshare account and you can download a film in about a minute.

Xbox Live and PSN does work too on the uni network, they updated it this year.

The only crappy thing is that you have to log in every time, and it will disconnect if you leave the internet idle for about 15 mins.

One way i got to get torrents working was to use "hotspot shield" just google it basically it changes your IP to an Ameican one so you can download the .torrent file. Then disconnect from the hotspot shield to download the torrent at around 2mb/s or faster

Courts is wired, you are able to get games consoles online. Not surre about torrents, but things such as Limewire work. And you are able to get on porn, but make sure you lock the door, as one of my flatmates unfortunately failed to do this year.

Courts' rooms are wired, but internet is extremely quick... I've never seen anything like it...

Communal areas will be getting wireless as of September, and most of the campus will be covered by the end of next year.

As for setting up your own wireless router, it's actually in your accommodation agreement (or the AUP - can't remember which, but both are legally binding) that you agree not to introduce potential security risks into the system, which includes adding any kindof wireless adapters.
The system requires you to run a scan before you connect, checking all updates and antivirus are up to date - its a nightmare if they're not, so I'd advice updating everything a few days before you move in... It took my flatmate 2 weeks to get out of quarantine.

Huh?... So is there no lag on the Internet speed

So if I played wow/ xbox live... I won't have any lag?

Also wot if we don't want to have an anti virus...

As I currently don't have 1 on my comp, so would it not allow my comp to connect to the Internet

Also should I bring a computer or a laptop?

I didn't have any trouble playing my Xbox online - not that I ever had chance for it... :P

It's a requirement to use the network; if you don't have it, then you can't comply with the AUP and therefore aren't entitled to internet access... You can use something like AVG for free though... I think if you have none installed it prompts you to use whetever the uni uses.

I had a laptop to start with, but then brought my desktop over with my xbox, running both through my monitor, to save getting a TV license (...i bought a new 24" HD monitor - much sharper than any TV actually!)
