Okay, I'm going to try and make a mario cake like this, and apart from using big marshmellows, I'm not really sure how to make the mushrooms. I'm probs going to go with green and red ones, maybe using white chocolate buttons for the spots or just fondant. But any ideas how to make the head?

Also, not sure if I want the stars on the side, any other mario themed ideas?

Hmmm.. what flavoured cake would be good too?

You should obviously infuse the cake mixture with psychedelics before you bake it, for a true Mario experience.

I'd make the top of the mushrooms by just making normal fairy/cup cakes and then turning them upside down and covering them in icing. For the face bit I'd probably make that from cake as well. I'd bake a normal cake then use a round cutter to make the cylinder shape out of the cake and then again cover them in icing. Then I'd use a piping bag to do the eyes.

Thats one of the most awesome cakes I've ever seen:eek:. I'd make the heads out of fondant icing molded into upside down cup shapes. That would be the most simple way I think.

Put marshmallows in the mix because when you bake them they go all funny, pretty colours

Make a lil marzipan chain chomp too :P

This is what I think they're made of there.. but I've never used fondant before. I know, big challenge! Going to practise first, have a month til I need to make this.

My boyfriend's birthday. I've seen much better mario cakes, but probably far too complex for me to make without lots of trial runs. I might make these cookies too.

You can get it already made up so then you just need to shape it, shouldnt be too tricky. The first cake I made was a guitar one, a bit bigger than a guitar hero guitar, it took agessss but was well worth it. Good luck and post some pics when its done!

Think I might do this for my boyfriend sometime soon

I agree with the icing, I don't think cupcakes will work as they will be too heavy. Try making one first, if it all goes well you can do the rest.

Do you mind telling me which website you are getting these from? thanks!

I'd use marzipan to make the mushrooms. And you could use food colouring to dye the actual cake bit.

Unfortunately it's flickr http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3135/...d418ce6b15.jpg so no recipes. Everytime I google mario cakes it just comes up with pictures and doesn't really tell me how to make them

Anyone know what sort of cake to actually make? I'm guess it's going to have to be a tough cake, as in, it's going to bear a lot of weight on top!

TBH I'd just make an ordinary Victoria sponge, but maybe make 3 layers? That way it might be more sturdy. xx

I'd just make a thick chocolate sponge cake, theyre simple and should hold the weight easily, I reckon.

Well fruitcake would be pretty sturdy, but I reckon victoria sponge would be fine. Do a few layers and dye them all different colours.

Eh, the original cake does have a general recipe attached, where she tells you almost exactly how the cake is made:

    http://www.flickr.com/photos/baddrob...7606659861028/

    Same thing for the cookies:

    http://www.flickr.com/photos/baddrob...7606659861028/

Furthermore, the cake will not and should not carry a lot of weight on top - the toadstools are just marshmallow and fondant!

Fondant is tricky if you are a complete beginner, but here is a good guide:

    http://www.squidoo.com/decorate-with-fondant

I recommend Wilton; they have a huge selection of fondant colours, and their products are generally easy to find.

Furthermore there is an abundance of cake websites out there; if you just bother researching a bit, it should be easy as, well, cake.
