haha, the plate doesn't end in OVP does it? saying that, i think my car was salvagable after some pillock went into the back of me.
this is why you have to be so so so so careful when buying a car. some people are known to take the front off one car, the back off another, and weld them together, and the only way you would know is if you looked under the car or moved the floor mats.

first and foremost was it a dealer or private sale.
Dealers are obliged to make you aware I believe, Private sellers are not, however they are not allowed to misrepresent the car; in this instance it is quite able for you to proove he did know, but if he made no statements to the effect of it being written off then you're up the creak.
by all means, contact the seller and try for your money back etc, but you won't really have ground to stand on I'm afraid and may have to just cut your losses and loose a bit of the value when you sell on. if you're keeping the car for some time, it's not a big deal really.
The fact that it's had a respray, to me says that it was most likely a Cat C, in which case it will require a VIC check etc if not already done. (many sell write offs without disclosing without having a VIC done - god knows why, it's not a huge effort) if you haven't yet had the logbook through, you will get a notification telling you that you cant get the V5 until it's done.

What I don't understand is, how you managed to get a written off car insured?! All insurance companies are linked to the DVLA.. So they know if a car is a write off or not... Strange.

On the subject of dodgy cars... How's this for one!
7k miles (obviously not)
SDI + Classic trim = Used as taxi
No badges at the back or under side indicators - worrying.
Also 7k miles and a towbar??? You don't fit a towbar to a car and only do 7k miles!
Can this garage not be fined for selling cars where the milage has been fiddled?

I know it's too late now, but in future always get a HPI check done. You can get a text one for £3 which will tell you if the car has been stolen, scrapped, written off or had a change of colour. One of these actually saved me from buying a Cat C with no VIC test just two days ago.
