If someone is suffering from exhaustion, sleep deprivation, stress etc is it possible for them to become emotionally numb as a result? can they just block out a stressful situation/issue as a result and throw themselves into other things

Yes, completely normal if you're suffering from sleep deprivation in particular. Nearly goes without saying in some cases.

If you're struggling to sleep, make sure you're going to sleep early enough in the evning/night, have a Horlicks and go the toilet for a wee wee before sleeps, have your 3 meals a day at proper times, and avoid caffeinated and sugary drinks, especially later on in the day.

If there's something in particular keeping you awake after this, such as stress, then speak to your GP.
