Hey IBSPAIN, the type II task-the one with series and induction! no one in our class knew how to do it! Even the teacher had some problems!
Anyway, did u maybe solve it?

We were set that task on series and induction, and spent a lot of time on it, but nobody could solve no. 5!!! However, after doing some research we found out that there is a way to solve it with really advanced maths that not even our teacher could understand!!! Well, I hope that the examinors who mark it will realize that nobody understood that question.
Anyways, is anyone doing the type II or III tasks, the ones which are included in the Teacher's handbook? I think most of the schools take the tasks from there... although it's allowed to make up your own one.

Cheers!

TYPE I - Binomial Coefficients
- Probably the hardest, have solved all of it. Based on Pascal's Triangle.
TYPE II - Shock absorber model graph
- The easiest, got a pretty good mark, but I am thinking of redoing it. i.e. doing a different TII
TYPE III - Design of a ship's propeller
- I'm doing it now - medium difficulty (in comparison to the other two).

They're all from the handbook, I believe.

In the handbook there are:
Type I: The Koch snowflake, Series and induction, Zeros of cubic functions, Properties of quartics
Type II: Orbital radii of planets and moons of Jupiter, Flow rate, Radiometric dating, Creating a logistic model
And you should do only two tasks for portfolio (from session M06) - Type I: Mathematical Investigation, Type II: Mathematical Modelling

Hey all,

where can this handbook be obtained??? Is there the possibility the Type III Folio - Design of a Ship's Propellor Blade be posted for availability on the forum???

I'll scan it and upload it. Just a tick.
Here we go. http://server5.theimagehosting.com/image.php?img=prop.PNG
Enjoy.

Hey,

just wondering with the Type III Folio is there any chance you can post a completed folio and have available??? Would be most appreciated....

For examinations sessions to N05 you hae to do three tasks for your maths portfolio: Type I: mathematical investigation, Type II: extended closed-problem solving and Type III: mathematical modelling. The deadline for submitting the marks for the portfolio is 10 October.
Since M06 you write only TWO tasks: Type I: mathematical investigation and Type II: mathematical modelling.
So if you are doing exams in May 2006 or later and teacher wants you to write tasks for type I, type II and type III then something is wrong (If teacher wants you to write more than two tasks, maybe he/she wants to choose the best two of them but there should be only two types of tasks - mathematical investigation and mathematical modelling).
Also it can be little risky to do tasks from old handbook since criteria are changed.

In regards to a Type III Folio, wondering if anyone could post a complete Type III Folio on "Design of a Ship's Propellor Blade"

Mate, I've done it, but I don't want to distribute it. It's 14 pages, and took ages to write. I am willing, however, to help you in any way I can - so direct any of your questions about it to me - either right here, or as a PM, and I can help you get it done (well).

Our Type I portfolio was 'Investigating Sequences, Series and Products', so probably not the same thing. However, induction is usually fairly trivial; what are you having problems with?

Look at NICKTC's FTP: /UPOLOAD/Stevko/TSM. There is something about Math HL IA.
