I've lost my car keys and am using the spares right now. I can get a uncut key fob online. Does anyone know how much I'll be looking at paying to have my key cut and programmed? It's a Ford.

    How old is the car.
I looked about doing this, and I was told that it'd be very expensive for a newer car.
Check locksmiths in your local area, otherwise it'd be a main dealer thing. If it's like the one I think it is, then that is definitely a main dealer job. You may have to take some proof that you own the car with you.

    2006.

Locksmiths would be no good as they can't progam it. My key fob locks, unlocks the car and opens the boot.

Dealers will charge a lot - as in over £100. But, I'm pretty sure you can programme most Ford key fobs yourself at home, by following some simple steps from an online guide. Head on to a decent Ford forum and ask them if it is possible to do it for your model/year. If it is, get the key cut at a local locksmith, programme it yourself and spend the money saved on beer.

I hope so. I'll have a proper search tomorrow. However from the response I got from a seller on ebay was that it's possible to program it yourself so long as you have another working key fob. I don't, my spare key is a normal old school Ford key.

Ahhh, you might be at the mercy of a dealer/specialist then - I assumed your spare was a full-on key fob. Still worth a Google and an ask on the Ford forums though. I imagine there's independents/specialists who can do it cheaper than the dealer if need be.

you need the red/blue master key and one other key to program a third.

plenty of highstreet/market locksmiths can program your average ford key for less than £40.

The remote can usually be programmed yourself.
