I'm sure you've all heard by now that the Durham Union has invited the BNP to speak in a members only debate on multiculturalism at the Union, and that in response the NUS is requesting the debate be cancelled and apologies issues, lest they protest with UAF.

Anyone any thoughts? I've yet to meet someone in my college opposed to the debate, indeed those who have joined the 'KEEP DURHAM NAZI FREE' group/event are predominantly not from Durham uni...

They have every right to give a speech. Islam4uk had a right to give a speech at the LSE ( I think anyway), they jst ****** it up with their attempt to segrogate males and females.

Is there a BNP club at Durham then ? I havent ever heard of one on any university campus, though I definitely expected one at York.

I'm not aware of any BNP organisation within the University, and would highly doubt one exists.

I would love to see a debate with any controversial groups, e.g. the BNP, and I expect most people would.

However, the UAF activists (mainly a bunch of brain-dead communist & socialist students,) clearly know best about what we should and shouldn't be allowed to hear, and are no fans of free-speech and democracy themselves. As such, they'll scream, shout and generally try to disrupt the event as much as possible to prevent the public from hearing any other viewpoint than their own, in their usual way (until the Revolution at least, at which point opposition will be sent to the Gulags.)

In my experience of the NUS, most of it's representatives are very pro-Labour/left-wing/Marxist etc as well, so it doesn't surprise me that they're calling for it to be canceled either....

I dislike BNP but still think they should be given a chance to free speech.

However I cant help but be a snobby **** and point out your misuse of terms. You have stated that these students are left wing yet you call them fascists, an ideology associated with the right?

Also until yestaday I also believed that anarchism was merely a word to describe chaos and those who wanted rioting. However I must inform you that it appears to be a genuine ideology that, as far as im aware, aims to have the states involvement put at a minimal amount or eradicate it altogether.

Ironic also how the description that guy uses of the UAF is how many more would describe BNP...............just a thought

    Thanks!

However, it's a view picked up from paying more attention to older, more life-experienced (and probably more cynical) people, rather than idealistic students still wet behind the ears that like getting involved in fashionable causes.

Freedom of Speech. Simple as. It really is that simple.

The BNP should not be banned and anyone who says otherwise is against freedom of speech.

Isn't there a difference between freedom of speech and the platform for it?
The BNP have a right to hold their views, but does that mean that we should showcase them in such a manner? It's free speech to say something like 'all blacks are criminals and we should bring back the death penalty to get rid of them all without trial' but most people would argue we don't need to listen to it.

That said, the BNP have a growing public support and so maybe we should have to listen to them, or give them the chance to defend themselves. Still think it'll turn into a circus though... judging by Newsnight you may as well give out the rotten tomatoes on the way in.

The BNP have every right to speak. They have been democratically elected to a number of posts (MEPs, Councillers, London Assembly, etc.) The UAF are just a bunch of bloody fascists who are opposed to free speech and the rule of law.
