    hey all

    okay so trying to find the surface area of the curved portion of a hemisphere of radius a

    it asks me to integrate the element of area a^2 sin theta d theta d phi...

    I can do this fine, and get the right answer...

    I'm just a bit confused about how area elements transform though...

    because, say i was in x,y then dA = dx dy...

    but then to transform to spherical polars i thought it had to be 3d i.e. dx dy dz transforms to r^2 sintheta d theta d phi d r

    could someone explain how the transformation works please - i.e. clarify what is happening?
