It worked for me :smile:. Would help to say where you heard of him, like finding his name on an undergrad reading list and if you read any publications so it sounds more genuine than just finding him on a website and reading the line that said 'research interests'. A few friends did snicker at my name-dropping but in the end I got an MSc supervisor, a PhD adviser, and someone to sit on my Research Panel conditional on acceptance.

I mentioned one of the History faculty members (Dr. Peter Thompson) in my PS, but I ended up being paired with one of the Junior Research History Fellows who fits even better with my research interests than the Professor that I mentioned. I had never heard of who this fellow was when I read his name on my acceptance letter (Dr. Nicholas Cole), but he is a fellow at St. Peter's College.
