Are you ''Friends'' with your Lecturer?

Is anyone here friends with their lecturer or even teacher? I was just wandering because my cousin said that when he was at Uni he was really good friends with his Philosophy Lecturer. He said that him and his mates used to go the pub with him and stuff. I dont know if he was having me on but he seemed like he was telling the truth.

Is this common?

Hardly know any of my lecturers. In sixth form it was different - classes were smaller, and you got to know your teacher. I wouldn't say I was friends with any of them, but it was more friendly and informal than the rest of school, and I know quite a few people who have kept in contact with their past teachers etc.

Once in second year, one of my lecturers (who happened to be a postgrad) went to the same society social as me. That was the most awkward experience of my university career (thus far :ninja:).

Yep, with 4 of them. They are great, we stop and chat all the time

It is not common, although, it is advisable during exam periods. :p:
I've always been able to comfortably chat with most teachers and lecturers but never taken it so far as going to the pub/ out for lunch or dinner with them. Oh except a pub quiz for the biology class during A levels...

A friend of mine is amazed that I didn't go out for lunch and stuff with all my lecturers, she says everyday there's at least one of the lecturers wanting to spend the afternoon with them. Is it just me or did anyone elses lecturers seem to be far too busy to wana hang out with a load of undergrads? All our seemed to spend all day in their office/ a lab/ participating in some kind of training.

My department was fairly small, so it was pretty informal and close-knit. The lecturers would join us in the pub and at social events, wasn't awkward at all.

If you have personal tutors or project supervisors, then you'll inevitably start building relationships with them. The supervisor for my final year project lived quite locally to me, so on our days off, he told me to just come round his instead of us both going into the department. I met his wife and cat. So yeah, it happens.

I've just been for coffee with one of my lecturers. It's generally more common in the smaller departments.
When I was an Undergrad some friends and I would often go fro a drink with our lecturer. Now I have graduated I live very close to him and we often meet for a drink.

no. I'm friendly with a few of my tutors and lecturers but I'm not friends with any of them. I'm petrified of my personal tutor. He is like an Irish version of the demon headmaster, but with less spinny-eye and more liam o'flaherty.
When the OP said "Friends" I thought they meant....you know..."friends", wink wink, nudge nudge.
Maybe not friends necessarily, but I'd say everyone on my course gets on really well with our tutors, and it's easy enough to just have a casual chat with them. It is a small class though, there's only 13 of us in total. It's better that way though, I transferred from a bigger uni to this one because it's closer and I didn't have any friends in the class of 40, whereas I'm friends with everyone from the class of 13. And with a smaller class you get to know your lectures more than you would if there were say 40 or 80 people on your course.
We are friends with language teachers, and the Russian dept's quite close knit. We deffo have some sort of relationship with some of the lecturers too.
i know some of mine fairly well. it tends to happen more as you progress through your course and specialise more, hence being in smaller teaching groups.
