Right I've recently gotten a guitar and a friend told me about a website with a load of tabs on. Anyway (This may sound stupid) but I don't understand them. Here is what I cannot understand:
e ----------------------------------------------
b ------11----------11---------11---------11----
g ---11----11----11----11---11----11---11----11-
d -9--------------------------------------------
a ------------9--------------------------------
E ------------------------9---------11----------
^I'm pretty sure the letters e,b,g etc... are notes. But what are the numbers? how am I supposed to know how to play this song.

The letters are not the notes being played, but the string names (the note the string produces when it is open.) The bottom line 'E' represents the top, thickest string on the guitar.
As for playing tabs, the numbers simply represent on which number fret to put your finger on that particular string.
Hope that was helpful -

Its a top down layout of the guitar neck.
The letter represent the strings, i.e. the EADGBE strings are from lowest to highest pitch respectively.
The numbers are which fret you play the note on and just read it from left to right... OK? -

The number is the fret. For the first bit press down on d string, 9 frets down from the top.
I started playing the guitar a couple of months ago..
Out of interest, what song is that? -

e is the thinnest string, E is the thickest one.

you got your answer already however if you ever see any of the following
p means pull off
h means hammer on
/ means slide
b bend
Squigly line - which i can't find on my keyboard because my ketboard makes no sense means vibrato
thought i'd add them since it seems like you may not know them
also download powertabs or guitar pro - a lot more useful than standard tabs imo -
