im a mature student (mid 30's) and trying to loose weight.

i am using an online calculator to find out how many calories my body needs per day to stay the same weight.

    it says i need 3250:
2000 cause i am studying computers, sitting around
1200 cause i bike it to and from uni every day , which is a 35mile round trip , approx 2hours 30mins on a good day

my intake of caloires is about 1600 a day . which is a defesit of about 1650 caloires per day , is this too much ??

ps i feel ok each day , just want to make sure though

    was about 172 at xmas
im 151 lbs at the mo

I doubt your requirement is 3,200/day

How much do you weigh? height?

    male 35
    5ft 9
    151 lbs
= 1954 cals a day by doing nothing but sleep and awake
plus the 1200 cals a day from 35 miles cycle .
some cals say 1100 others say 1400 cals from cycling , so i took it at 1200

Not really... if you think about it logically, he's burning 1200 of his 1600 calories from cycling, so only has 400 calories to maintain himself when he needs 2000. That's quite serious malnourishment...

That calorie calculator thing doesnt sounds very accurate - thats a lot of calories! But whether you need this amount or not, surely you dont need to lose much weight? I mean, you're only 151 lbs! Wouldnt toning be all that was needed?
If that calculator is right, that seems like alot of calories to cut out, but if you don't feel tired/hungry all the time, I guess it's ok. Just don't lose too much weight!

A daily 1000 calorie deficit means you will loose 2 lbs per week, If you feel fine with your current deficit in the sense that you have energy, your not in a constant state of hunger then you have most likely calculated your calorie needs wrong.

If you are in a constant state of hunger and feel a lack of energy, your deficit is too high and your body will respond by going into 'starvation mode' which means that your body will begin to consume lean tissue instead of fat reserves for energy.

    by this calcuator 35 miles takes 2hours 30mins = 14 MPH
    http://www.machinehead-software.co.u...time_calc.html

    at 14 MPH cycling = 806 per hour * 2.5 hours =
    2015 caloires plus 1950 i need = 3965 per day

    * your calculations are off
    * why are you dieting if you are only 151lbs?

you need some weights dude, and protein - badly

and that much cycling needs to be compensated for via food, and 1600 isn't enough

You're not going to be burning 800 calories per hour cycling at 14mph unless you're really unfit, have a comedy bike or are cycling into a gale force wind. That's the sort of number I'd burn on the ergs and be completely dead at the end.

Edit: After a bit of research; if you're reasonably fit and have a good bike you'll probably be burning 600 or less per hour.
