    dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/<device label>

    [EDIT] In Linux, of course...
    [EDIT mk.2] Well... the SMART data would show that it wasn't brand new, but that command would basically zero the drive so that its useful storage area would just read 0x000000000000000000000000000000 00000...

    What about file names... do they get overwritten/make dissappear so no-one can trace what you've had on the HDD?

    It does it at the device level, so it overwrites the MBR and the Partition Table. This is partially why dd's earned the moniker of "data destroyer". It's a very powerful tool and we use a slightly adapted version of it to make forensic images in the *NIX environment.
