    Guys, what would be the best way to wipe a partition so nothing can be recoverable but still be usable?

    Selling my laptop soon...

    Do file names get wiped too?

    dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/sda1
    Where sda1 is the mount point of the partition. That will zero the partition and that'll deal with the the file table, too. You'll need to format the partition afterwards.

    Any live cd should be able to deliver this command.

    Not sure if it does partitions but I'd expect it should be able to do them. I've never actually used it, though :erm:

    They're already as bad as Mac vs. PC. It's something we can look into. I'll have a chat with secretmessages about it because Mobile Phones is one of the areas we're going to be concentrating on.

    For university yes, my entire 3rd year work was practically done on Ubuntu and CentOS.
