Precisely. It really gets me cross that most students seem to have a pathological hatred for the Conservatives. At the end of the day, this budget is increasing our income tax allowance, at a cost of a few extra quid a month on VAT. **** and booze aren't going up and if you're a Cider drinker, you're in the money! There might be a little pain in the Autumn Spending Review as the education budget and thus the number of university places will inevitably be cut, but I don't see that as an especially bad thing, providing that funding is cut in the right areas - i.e. areas that don't realise long-term value to the economy.
I am not sure why the Tories are getting all this hate tbh. It is almost a lose-lose situation for them. If they had done a Labour and continued to pump money in people would complain about the deficit and benefits, and if they make drastic cuts they still get slated as the enemy of the working class. Cutting spending was bound to happen at some point, and from a political and economic standpoint now was probably the best time to do it. The media has not focussed enough on the £2bn bank levy either, though I imagine its because it breaks the "posh Conservatives helping the rich" stereotype, which isn't as great a story as "The Tories are coming"

The media will unconditionally hate the current government, as it's more entertaining to hear that they're doing it wrong rather than doing it right. :woo:
