On all sorts of websites, adverts are always popping up proclaiming things like "GREEN CARD LOTTERY" "COME AND LIVE IN AMERICA", and "BRING YOUR FAMILY TO AMERICA", they strut around with their green cards as if everyone is just dying to live in the land of the free. I've never seen any other country so forcefully advertise the opportunity to immigrate to their country with such an assumption that every reader would jump at the chance to live there. Most countries take the approach "here are the facts, here is the requirements, here is the preceedure - now you decide whether you want to live here".

The assumption strikes me that living in the US is by default undoubtedly better than anywhere else, and that money in the US is better, America is freer, and more technologically advanced than anywhere else you will ever live, so roll up, roll up get your Green Cards to bring your family to the land of the free, home of the brave!

I don't dislike Americans, but the prevalent arrogant attitute towards other countries pisses me off quite a bit.

Yes that's it! They're so culturally retarded.

I've not seen the adverts, other than those fricking california ones, I know what you mean, its very like "we're awesome" but its an advert, so generally on adverts they're not going to say the bad things. It'd be like coke saying "come drink coke, it tastes good, but you'll mess up your teeth with all the sugar in it, and diets not much better either"

I'm pretty sure they're not from the US government but feel free to prove me wrong. I always thought they were just a scam. I mean I know there is a Green Card lottery but why advertise it?

Sites like this that charge you to apply are all a bit dodgy.

I haven't seen any adverts but I'd love to live in america. But my friend won the green card lottery, moved to america with his family, hated it and is now moving back here

These adverts are by companies trying to rip off desperate people. They will often charge you stupid amounts of money and promise that your chance to get a Green Card will be higher.

Most of the websites are scams.

Not really - because I'm pretty sure those are scam websites getting you to pay them loads to get a guaranteed green card. So obvs they won't say bad things! I don't really buy that the US government advertises their green card lottery on internet porn sites and online gaming sites.

Welcome to the concept of 'advertising'.
