    If doing my first organic write up and it asks to quote the m.p over a range of temperatures, how big/small should this range be?

    Well I wasn't really concentrating but it was something like 120-130 is that too large to quote?

    If that's the range you got then that's what you got :p:

    The size of the range is an indication of how pure a compound is...the smaller the range the greater the purity. Look up the melting point of the compound to see what is quoted in the literature for comparison (it's always good to put a reference for this in your write-up)

    I was just wondering what a typical range would be...

    sigh... just got negged for this thread.

    Typical range is 2 or 3 degrees or so but some compounds have larger ranges even when highly pure
