lol *shugs* and i'm rejecting my offer for Geography from there! - grr if only they didn't put me in St.Mary's....
haha Marys isnt that bad, you know you can swap colleges once you are here? Cuths has lots of people wanting to swap into it, we have had quite a few from Marys already or so i've been told! and colleges dont really matter anyway, its just where you live for your first year and whose sports teams you play for!

Looks like i'll probably go to durham, hatfield college for Physics, I applied to UCL/Bath/Soton/Leicster/Camb/Dur, still deciding between UCL and Durham, soooo difficult! What would you choose?

Do you mean "valedictorians"?

yep it is, thats why i picked it its such a good course, i just can't get over it!!

Durham also has the best Geography department in Europe!

so are there lots of people coming to Durham then?? it is amazing, especially St Cuth's Society, all the other colleges are irellevent, and no i'm not just extremely biased!!
Woah. My roomie is going to Durham for Geography too. St. Johns! Is it nice?

yeah Johns is nice, it is where all the theology students go though so apparently if you aren't hardcore religious then nobody will talk to you, thats what my mate at Johns told me anyway!
But its a nice place, and its on the Bailey so its close to everything!

as long as you don't end up in Hatfield then any college is ok really

I know a lot of ppl doing physics at Durham and they love it, they all say its an amazing course etc etc!

and Hatfield isn't THAT bad really! there is just a lot of college rivalry in Durham, but the one thing we all agree on is that we hate hatfield! the place itself is nice tho, its just some of the people you have to watch out for

I'm applying to Nottingham and Durham.. can't choose! But they said the weather in Durham is awful. True? I've never been to either place. So far Notts have given be an ABB offer. Other places I can go to is Manchester (ABB) or Leeds (BBB). can't decide!

Durham seems to be a bit too lifeless for me, Newcastle is just a short train ride away so it wouldn't be too bad but I don't think I could live without a bit more nightlife. If I do go up north (where the weather isn't the best ), I think that I would choose Newcastle University instead. My first choice is likely to be Notts though!!!

haha lifeless?? well it depends, i come from Liverpool which is one of the best places for nightlife in the north, so i thought i might get bored in Durham, but i havent been yet. Theres a few clubs, loads of bars and pubs, all the college bars which are v. cheap and a river crusier which turns into a floating nightclub...what more could you ask for?!?
It all depends on what you like, and what college you go to. For example Cuths has a great social life, our college bar is one of the best and there are loads of social things organised all the time, but other colleges aren't as lucky.

and i don't know what you mean by the weather being bad, Durham is in the pennine rain shadow so we don't get a lot of precipitation, but it does get very cold!!!

Very cold = Bad weather

I personally dilike the type of pub that Durham tends to specialize in. I also thought that Durham has the "offical worst club in europe"?!? I think that if I was to take up their offer I would constantly daytripping to Newcastle!!!

actually i think you will find that Klute was the second worst club in Europe...until the winner was condemned and burnt down......ahem.....and i've seen much worse anyway, the judges were annoyed cos they didnt get preferential treatment just because they were from some big magazine and they had to pay to get in haha, don't always trust what FHM tells you!!

i thought i would always be on the train to Newcy, but i have only been twice and realised it wasn't really any better! mind u i like the kind of pubs durham specialises in, cheap ones, with good music on the jukebox

lol fair enough, but a lack of clubs doesnt make somewhere lifeless, if you have a personality and are surrounded by lots of cool people then you can have fun wherever you go!

Oh btw.. If I don't get in. Are Nottingham, Manchester and Durham good 2nd choices? And which one would you think is the best? I've never visited them before and I heard Durham is freeeeeeezing. But yeh, I've got offers from all of them for ABB and I will use them as 1st or 2nd choices if cambridge rejects me.
Well... it's probably a little pointless discussing this, since you'll probably end up in Cambridge, but, FWIW, I would choose Nottingham in your position.

It really depends on what criteria you feel are important, and what you intend to do after you graduate. If you're going to return to Asia to work, the Manchester is probably the best known, although Nottingham does have a campus in Malaysia and are IMHO slightly better academically. Durham, on the other hand, has something of a reputation for attracting the Oxbridge-types, and its reputation is probably better in Europe and N. America.

Location is another thing to consider... do you like a bustling metropolis with active nightlife (Manchester) or a more sedate town (Durham). Durham is also rather cold, or so I'm told, so that's perhaps another consideration.

In any case, I would choose Nottingham, Manchester or Durham over Leeds, although the latter does have things to recommend it.

What is wrong with hatfield, I made an Open application, so i didn't really have a say in it?! Is it just rivalry, or people there??
