    Quick yes or no question, if you have a binomial expansion e.g. 3^{-1}(\frac{x}{3} -1)^{-1}, for the 1st term, would the -1 replace the 1, the same way that x would be replaced by \frac{x}{3}?

    I'm trying to see if I went wrong on my last question and do this one correctly
    i'd rearrange the bit in the bracket -1 + x/3
    you can see that it's not in the form 1 + ax, so you'd have to take out a -1

    so inside the bracket you'd have 1 - x/3, i.e. a = -1/3

    then you'd continue as normal

    Ok, thanks. The question was actually (x-3) so I've factorised once already. Surely that'd change the +x/3 to -x/3 though if I factorised again by -1?

    yeah that's what you need to do, to put what's inside the brackets in the standard form (1 + ax)

    Ahh ok thanks. Its little bits like that I fall with. Might have been the problem with the last one where I was 1 term out of the options

    (x-3)^{-1}?

    You just take -1/3 out

    (-3)^{-1}(1-\frac{x}{3})^{-1}
