    Hi I am a 17 year old male weighing about 70kg

    Although I look fairly healthy from the outside my average heart rate is 83 :/

    I've just realised how poor this is and so have started doing 30 minutes of cardio 3 times a week for the past few weeks

    the question I want to ask is how long (as an estimate) would it take for me to reduce my heart rate to somewhere around 70?

    Are you sure theres not another reason for it? Maybe your just reading it wrong? =P However, normal is like 60-80 so its not that far out, but there are many other reasons or medications that can increase your HR. And theres is no set time peroid of exercise that will reduce your HR by a certain value. The more fit you become, the more efficient your heart will be, but there is no set rate with which it will decrease.

    Make sure you measure your resting HR when you are totally calm, do it before bed or something, because it can vary quite a lot and maybe you just walked around a bit or something.

    6-12 months.

    Your training wont help it, you need to improve fitness not do long cardio sessions - you need to recover faster this makes the heart stronger so you need intense interval work
