Some amount of truth to it. Look at the majority of Africa; it contains some of the most poor and corrupt nations on the earth.
To be fair, that is a direct result of coloniansm. Just look at Iraq Afghanistan, and Pakistan. Turns out randomly drawing lines that separate communites wasnt a great idea after all.

there were so many killed because they had substandard buildings.
If it is rebuilt they need to have rubber pads under the foundations to absorb earthquake rumbles and heaves.
They should have a good plan to deal with disasters in the future. For example, there should be designated persons to carry water to those in need.

You can't just give up on countries, what the hell.

I agree that a lot of charity work that goes on is harmful, e.g. flooding their markets with our excess foods which puts their farmers out of business.

But things like building schools will always be useful, maybe it shouldn't be taxpayer funded but I'd like to think that if it wasn't people would still give that money voluntarily anyway.

Looking at success stories such as Botswana and Ghana it seems to me that these poor countries need capitalism, and not socialism - that's how the west got rich, that's how India and China are getting rich now, that's how Botswana are one of the richest African countries when not long ago they were incredibly poor.

But let's actually help them be capitalist by offering them free trade, end the harmful tariffs!

Western colonial rule made **** of half the world and hardly left the 3rd world with anything to build functional states with and now people are complaining about foreign aid. It makes me a bit sick considering Europe and the West gathered a lot of the power they boast today through this ruthless colonial rule. People say thats the past and we should move on etc but 3rd world countries are still reeling from our expansionist past.
    How's it our past?

Our ancestors did these things not us. Why should I pay for something I DIDN'T DO?

Well actually in Haiti case is more my ancestor than your.

France have a strong responsibility about how pour Haiti is.

Basically they slap us in the face in 1804 by revolting for independence. After that they butchered whites people so others left to go to other island. You have to know at that time Haiti have pretty good economy. Sugar, tincture etc... Actually it was the first economy in the area. But France made sure they don't go rich. We even ask around 1830 for redress (not sure is the right word, I mean money) what they finished to pay in early 20th century and is equivalent to now day 10billions euro.

I supposed the USA occupation was not a good part of their history.

I think European have duty to their former colony.

Don't the inhabitants of former colonies have a duty too?

    It's their country after all.

No they don't. The natives wanted us out that badly - why should we help them. They can suck it up.

Germany was burned to the ground, split into two, had a quarter of its land ripped off with ethnic cleansing on said land, had its patents stolen, etc etc. This but 65 years ago. Where is Germany today?

Cry me a river, build a bridge, get over it.
