# Reminder theorem watch

1. Hi pls help me.. i am trying to solve this question

The reminder when x^2 + ax + 4 is divided by (x-4) is four times the reminder when the same expression is divided by (x-1). Find the value of a.

i tried to solve as below:

f(4) = 16 +4a + 4 = 20 + 4a = 4f(1)
f(1) = 1 + a + 4 = 5 + a

... and 4*f(1) = 20 + 4a
....and f(4) = 20 + 4a..... so how i am supposed to find the value of a from this... or i could do it using other methods?.. pls help me. Thank you...

Does it say find the value or values of a?

Because as far as I can see, it will work for all values, except of course -5 (because then you would get a remainder of 0 for both). I mean, surely you've shown that f(4) = 4f(1) without making any assumptions about a? i.e. you've proved it to be true, in general.
