yesterday I noticed that I was lagging real bad on my PS3, so I decided to do a bit of digging and tested my ping via www.pingtest.net which led me to discover my ping was around 250ms, now I have a 20Mb broadband connection from virgin media and have never experienced lag like this before, after this I pinged google through cmd prompt just to check the website hadn't lied and I also did a tracert through cmd prompt, what I find strange is the amount of ip's my connection goes through before reaching its destination (google), a copy of my tracert is below and attached and I would appreciate it if any could help my understand/fix this issue.

I am guessing you are being monitored by the new virgin trial

    or virgin is ****

    call up virgin

or try using open DNS although I am not that sure tbh

Number of hops or internet speed shouldn't necessarily be a problem. If your bandwidth is being heavily used by other things that could have an impact.

From that traceroute it looks like you have significant loss between hops 1 and 2. Without knowing what you're network's like or how Virgin normally works it's probably either an issue with something locally (connection between wireless router and cable router ?) or your link to Virgin (from your cable box to the first router it talks to).

If you haven't already it might be worth rebooting any wireless access points, routers, cable modems etc. and see if that makes any difference.

I don't think changing to using open dns is going to make any real improvements at this point (although it might give some other benefits.)

Hop 1 - 2 on a Virgin Media connection is the link between the router and the cable modem.

Thanks for the responses so far guys, I have tried rebooting the router etc. and I have also phoned virgin to no avail, if anyone else has any other ideas to why this is happening or how to fix it any help/advice would be appreciated.

    Thanks

Plug your PC directly into the modem and try again. If it's fast then, then eirther the WAN interface on the router is dodgy, or the cable is.
