We were best friends and started going out. now I want to dump her for reasons I dont want to say. How exactly can we stay friends because I want the relationship back to how it was before we started going out.

In these situations, it's not really something someone else can direct you on. It depends on how your exgirlfriend reacts to the situation so you should base your reactions on that.

Personally you should just be straight up honest about what you want. How many other ways can you say "Let's be friends instead..."? It's going to be awkward either way so just get it out the way and be straight.

If you've been going out for quite some time, then more than likely your friendship will never return to how it was.

Believe me Ive tried, having gone through the same situation, 3 months post breakup im starting to realise things will never be the same again. Or at least a couple of years.

If both parties deal with it in a mature and thoughtful manner... then yes, it may be salvaged.

I'm going to have to say time apart. If after awhile, as in after you've moved on and seen other people, you still want to be friends I don't see what can go wrong. having said that, it is more likely you will loose your friend if you breakup with her. Sorry, part of the "dating my best mate" package.

Just let her know that you don't think thats it's working out for you and you still really want to be friends with her.

Lets be honest. Very few people who end up getting together after being close friends can ever regain the refriendship to the same level. You have to ask yourself if you really want to break up with her or not. Do you fancy someone else or is there someone else on the scene? This will make it even more difficult.

make her want to dump you first, it'll make things A LOT easier and won't knock her ego, or force you to be 'the bad guy'

OP, I dated one of my friends but not for long (2 months) and when it ended we spent some time apart and then everything got back to normal.
But it was obvious it wasn't working for us as a couple.

If you've dated a long time, it will be harder, so I suggest you spend some time apart, even wait until both of you are seeing someone else and then start being friends again.
